Biography

German visual artist Stefan Dotter is currently based in Japan and is focusing on the mediums of photography and film. His work indulges in his signature uniform writing, minimalist formal language and reduced aesthetics, often drawing inspiration from Japanese elements. His series read like a continuous documentation of a precise and aesthetic view of the world, like the constant observation through the lens of an ingenious autodidact.

In 2012 Dotter founded Whitelies Magazine, positioned as a cultural and visual dialog between the Asia-Pacific and what we perceive as the west. He currently holds the position of Editor in Chief of the publication, which has published 11 issues to date, and runs „Whitelies Studio“, a collective based creative agency. Furthermore he has worked as a consultant for the United Nations, teaching photography to students in Afghanistan.

His work has appeared in publications such as Atmos, British Journal of Photography, Document Journal, Purple, Re-Edition, Vogue and various others. He has worked on various advertising projects for brands like Chanel, Dior, Hermés, Issey Miyake, Mame Kurogouchi and Thom Browne. His works have been part of solo and group exhibitions in London, Paris, New York, Oslo and Berlin.
