Stefan Dotter

German visual artist Stefan Dotter is based in Japan, where his practice spans photography and film. His work is defined by a distinctive visual language rooted in minimalism, repetition, and restraint, often drawing from Japanese aesthetics. Across photography, moving image, and publishing, his work forms an ongoing observation of the world through a precise and deeply personal perspective..

In 2012, Dotter founded Whitelies Magazine, conceived as a cultural and visual dialogue between the Asia-Pacific region and the West. As Editor-in-Chief, he has led the publication through eleven issues, while also establishing Whitelies Studio, a multidisciplinary creative studio. His practice extends beyond editorial work, including consulting for the United Nations and teaching photography to students in Afghanistan.

Dotter's work has appeared in publications including Atmos, British Journal of Photography, Document Journal, Purple, Re-Edition, and Vogue. He has created campaigns for Loewe, Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Zara, Issey Miyake, and Maison Margiela, and his work has been exhibited internationally in London, Paris, New York, Oslo, and Berlin.

Dotter's first monograph, RECORD, documenting natural habitats and Indigenous communities across the Amazon, Borneo, and Madagascar, was published in 2025.
